HOW TO CHANGE YOUR NAME AFTER YOUR WEDDING IN NIGERIA

Hi there, if you are reading this then I believe you must need to know the process for name change in Nigeria after your wedding. This article seeks to show you what needs to be done because as a new bride you do not need to wait for your husband to start nagging you about this before you do it.

Why do you need to change your name after your wedding? You need to change your name to your husband’s name for legal and personal reasons. Legal reason is for you to be known as legally married to your husband in case of any future matters arising also for legal documents and official purposes as well.  Personal reason is so you can officially be addressed as a Mrs.

It is easy and inexpensive especially when you choose to do it yourself or you can hire the services of a lawyer if you are very busy or don’t want that stress. This is just a routine job for lawyers although they may make you think otherwise to justify their charges. Send us a message if you need a lawyer and we can connect you.
So here is the process for the change of name:
First and foremost, you need to do a sworn affidavit signed by the deponent at any high court near to you.  an affidavit for change of name from your maiden name to that of your husband.  The document for name change is already available, it’s just for you to provide your details  e.g. that I known as Ethel Obi Wazobia , your address, now wish to be known and addressed as Mrs. Ethel Tunde Johnson ,with your marriage date etc.
Secondly, once the first step is concluded, you need to a newspaper publication. Pay a visit to any media house and pay for the publication e.g guardian newspaper, the Sun. Punch etc. They will publish it and inform you of the date it will be out. Make sure you buy and keep a copy of this newspaper publication as you will need it for many things like when you need to change your name on your international passport or your bank accounts.
